Mit dem Smartphone-Tarif wird das Mobilfunknetz eines der deutschen Mobilfunknetzbetreiber (Vodafone, Telekom, E-Plus, o2) genutzt. Der Nutzer ist jedoch Kunde des Smartphone-Tarif-Anbieters.
Volumentarife enthalten ein monatliches Daten-Inklusivvolumen nach dessen erreichen zusätzliche Kosten für die Datenübertragung anfallen. Datenflatrates mit unbegrenzter Zeit- und Volumennutzung unterliegen in der Regel einem monatlichen Limit, ab dem die Übertragungsrate von UMTS- auf GPRS-Niveau gesenkt wird (Drosselung der Bandbreite). Im Folgemonat steht bis zum Erreichen des Limits wieder die hohe Bandbreite zur Verfügung. Weil Smartphone-Nutzer die Datendienste meist dauerhaft verwenden möchten, werden in diesem Vergleich keine Tagesflatrate aufgeführt.
